It is time again for a new round of nominations for nefarious news nonsense! In recognition of the efforts of the unprofessional press, journalistic sloth, and the deserved media mockery, we nominate these efforts in a variety of categories for end-of-the-year honors. To commemorate the legacy of muckraking reporting and shoe-leather investigation, we have created the Golden Remington Awards.
Our trophy honors the olden days when hard-scrabble hacks committed actual journalism and hammered out dispatches on those hefty word-smith devices. We compile some of the most fractured examples of journalism, nominating them for the un-coveted dishonor of our un-distinguished Remmy Awards.
Arriving very soon will be our end-of-year awards ceremony, as we (dis)honor the 2025 “winners” in a variety of categories. Here is the final batch of nominees for consideration, and keep an eye out in the coming week for our series, when we will be handing out trophies to the most un-impressive acts of journalism throughout the past year!

There was a big scoop offered up that the dastardly Appeal to Heaven flag was seen on display at the Department of Education.
What makes it so controversial is something Zach has a hard time wrapping his head around. He states it is a Christian Nationalist flag (without much explanation), but also a white supremacist emblem, and of course, a symbol of insurrection because it was seen on January 6. Small matter that the photo in the body of the piece also shows the Stars & Stripes, so THAT must also be a racist/seditious/religious flag, by Zach’s own logic.
That this reporter had to delete his posts making doltish comments about the flag that George Washington commissioned, before we were even a nation, only makes his ignorance more hilarious.

One would think that after all of these years, the mockery directed at the overuse of “Nazi” accusations or the neutered impact that this practice now delivers would temper the use of the charge. Instead, the press seems intent on keeping on with this infantile reaction, and we might have reached the bottom of the Third Reich barrel.
D.C. correspondent Herman saw some news and concluded that Marco Rubio had entered the brown-shirt jackboot arena with his recent move at the State Department: He called for a change in the official font used in the agency – JUST LIKE HITLER!
The only problem with Herman’s undermedicated assessment is that Rubio was simply reverting to the long-used New Times Roman typeface that had always been used, because it had been changed in 2023 by Antony Blinken, for more inclusionary reasons, or such. That means, based on Steve’s fractured logic, that Blinken was the one to behave in Nazi-like fashion.

It can be a fascinating example when a journalist’s affection for the Democrats and their knee-jerk opposition to President Trump collide in the same moment. To see a supposedly esteemed member of the press do so not only in a singular post, but to deliver this in successive sentences, it becomes an otherworldly experience.
Ezra Klein felt the need to take on Trump’s position regarding health care being granted to illegal aliens. He was also in apex fulsome mode in wanting to rave about Gavin Newsom, and in so doing, he accused Trump of lying on the subject, AND praised Newsom for doing the very thing Trump allegedly lied about happening.
Simply a marvel to behold.
Trump often lies about Democrats giving healthcare to undocumented immigrants. In California, Newsom actually did it. And defends it.
“I’m proud of that. I believe in universal health care.”
But, he says, “we failed on the border. We need to own up to that.” pic.twitter.com/5MFgK9tFQu

Distinguished Breaking News
There was little surprise — and almost no delay — in the media following up on the news about the shooting taking place at Brown University with the delivered by rote call for gun control. Of course, also mandatory is the issuing of deeply inaccurate information in the process.
Ms. Witt invited on Congress Critter Seth Moulton (MA-06), and together they displayed sheer ignorance on the issue. Moulton was, of course, calling for at least minimal gun restrictions while displaying ignorance; this was in a state with some of the toughest gun laws, as well as taking place in a gun-free zone. And before this, Witt complained about the lack of restrictions on the rifles used in the shooting.
No rifles had been employed, however, as all news reports were saying that handguns were used.
After mistakenly implying that the Brown University killer used a rifle, MS NOW’s Alex Witt pushes hard for gun control. https://t.co/KaME51WH4v

The network’s resident law enforcement and intelligence analyst felt the need to weigh in on the Brown-U shooting and deliver dire analysis. He learned that the person of interest (who was later released as an inaccurate focus) had laser sights on his gun(s), and this represented some sort of elevated threat.
Miller explained these are high-grade, high-tech additions to weaponry, normally used by the military or professionals.
Or, as I feel the need to explain to their weapons expert, you can also find them at most any retail toy supplier.
We have Nerf guns in the house for the kids that have laser sights.
But sure…”professionals and military people” only use these…

There has been no shortage of garment rendering and follicle ignition among the Notre Dame faithful, as well as various members of the sports media, when the Fighting Irish were not included in the field of the final 12 teams to qualify for the NCAA college football championship.
But even with the hordes of wailing voices, Mr. Jackson managed to stand out by delivering the most desperate explanation of things. See, the Irish were most likely left off the list because they have a black head coach, Marcus Freeman.
Yes, of COURSE race had to somehow have a role in this, though there has been no such example of any other black coaches being slighted for any reason, and despite the preponderance of black players on every single team, and – oh, that’s right – this very same coach managed to lead this very same team to the championship game just one year ago.
They say Marcus Freeman’s race, Notre Dame’s CFP exclusion aren’t connected — yet the situation seems off https://t.co/KLso7KqHhN

Now you might be sitting back and declaring there is no way on Earth there could be any connection to current immigration enforcement activity and the death of George Floyd five years ago. Well, that kind of sloth thinking will see to it you do not gain a job at the Star Tribune!
Following the breaking news of the widespread charitable taxpayer fraud in the Minneapolis Somali community to the tune of billions of dollars, ICE agents have been deployed in the city to begin detention efforts. During one sweep, agents targeted a Nigerian who had overstayed his visa, and he fled the authorities as his girlfriend drove off with him and refused to stop. She was arrested, and it was later revealed that she was the sister of the woman who had originally filmed the George Floyd confrontation with police that ultimately led to his death.
So there you have it, a perfectly reasonable explanation of…something…significant in all of this.

Distinguished Cultural Criticism
As the supposed fracture in conservative America is taking place, with much of this involving Candace Owens, one thing has become rather clear: Her impact in conservative circles is rather muted, but her impact on the media, desperate to foster this fracture going deeper, is extensive.
Miller typifies this desperation in the press with his explanation of her import in a way that he was too oblivious to notice.
After hearing that Owens is strictly a digital presence who does not really have much traction in real-world environments, Tim insists that Candace has influence that stretches well beyond the online realm — just ask those who are addicted to TikTok!
I’m sorry but this assessment of Candace is totally wrong and if you think she’s an only online phenomenon it’s bc your social circle is college-grad newspaper reading Republicans/Dems. Speak on a campus or talk to someone who gets news from TikTok and report back. pic.twitter.com/CKXjU7z7r7
