Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not be forgetful of hospitality, for through this, some have entertained angels unawares.” A homeless vet did not know that his spontaneous response to someone in need would change the trajectory of his life. And we are very thankful it did.
Deeds of kindness is the subject of this week’s Feel-Good Friday.
President Donald Trump signed another slew of executive orders on Friday, one of which directed Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins to establish better care for veterans, improve accountability for that care, and establish a National Center for Warrior Independence in West Los Angeles. The Warrior Independence Center will serve as a residence for homeless veterans across the nation with a goal of housing up to 6,000 veterans by 2028.

In January 2024, the VA documented that 32,882 veterans were homeless. Some of the reasons included lack of stable employment, lack of affordable housing, struggles with addiction, and mental health challenges.
We don’t know which situation impacted Navy veteran Jeff Daley’s life, but he has been homeless for eight years. However, he was making strides in turning his life around. Daley had just begun a job at Sprouts Farmer’s Market in Irvine, CA, and he used a free gym membership to shower every morning before he went to work. Daley was going about his work day when a “chance” encounter with a young man asking for help to purchase baby food was the pivotal turning point:
“I was just hoping for something better to come along and take some of the weight off my shoulders, and it really did. Jimmy, I really want to thank you,” Jeff said in tears.
[…]
Jeff was working at the Irvine grocery store when he received a request from a stranger – a dollar to buy baby food.
“Yeah, I’ll give you a dollar, man. That’s all I can do for you,” Jeff responds.
Unbeknownst to Daley, the person who asked for the dollar was social media influencer Jimmy Kellogg, aka “Jimmy Darts.” I hate the term “random acts of kindness,” because kindness is not random. It’s a deliberate and decisive action that is not only intentional, but impactful.
Darts’ Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube channel document Darts going around the country, choosing unsuspecting souls to be a part of his “Kindness Challenge.” So, nothing random about that, and at that moment, Daley was the subject of Jimmy Darts’ intentionality.
As soon as Daley gave him the dollar, Darts returned it to him. Daley was all types of confused.
“Why? I just gave it to you,” Daley responded. Darts asked Daley why he gave him the dollar, and Daley shared his story of being on the street and trying to work himself out of extreme poverty.

Darts not only gave Daley $500, but he crafted a plan to help him get off the streets:
Jimmy Darts, the man behind the voice asking for the dollar in the video, is a social media influencer with millions of followers who watch as he surprises strangers with kindness.
Jimmy said someone told him about Jeff’s situation.
“I go around the country finding people that are in need, and I went in here and I said alright I’m gonna do a kindness test and if he, you know, passes the test, I’m gonna reward him with 500 bucks for being awesome,” Jimmy said.
Darts set up a GoFundMe and shared Daley’s story of homelessness and his struggle to rebuild his life to his millions of followers. Within 48 hours, Darts had raised almost $100,000 on his behalf. Darts went to see Daley at the Sprouts location in Irvine again, and shared the good news with him.

Daley is effusive in his gratitude for the blessing that has been poured out on him. Without forethought, Daley gave all that he had; but received even more in return.
All our veterans deserve this and more. Godspeed to Jeff Daley, and prayers that he is able to find a sane and stable home where he can continue to rebuild.
