Three prison guards have reportedly been injured after being stabbed by a prisoner armed with a shiv in a shocking prison attack. The alleged incident happened at HMP Isle of Wight on Thursday (November 20), with police launching an investigation.
According to The Island Echo, two guards were rushed to the nearby St Mary’s Hospital after being attacked in the jail by a prisoner at the Inpatient Unit on the prison’s Albany site. A 32-year-old man sustained facial injuries, while a 28-year-old man received injuries to his right arm, it was reported. It is understood that a third staff member also received minor injuries during the alleged attack at the facility on Parkhurst Road, Newport.
According to reports, the prisoner used a makeshift weapon. They have now been moved to a Segregation unit.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police have not made any arrests at this time, but a probe is ongoing. It is understood that the two officers have been discharged from hospital.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “Attacks on our staff are cowardly and unacceptable which is why we push for the strongest possible punishments.”
