A driver travelling the wrong way for over three miles along a motorway came “inches from a head on collision”. The motorist prompted concerns among other drivers, with police receiving more than 30 emergency calls on Saturday night about the incident.
The driver was travelling on the M6, near Stoke on Trent, police said. Speaking about the incident, Staffordshire Road Crime Team said it had been nothing short of a miracle nobody was hurt.
Upon sharing a picture of the red car involved in the incident, the force said: “This evening, we received in excess of 30x 999 calls reporting this vehicle travelling the wrong way on the M6 from J15 (south on the north). We immediately closed the motorway at J14 Northbound, ready to put ourselves in harms way to protect the public.
“The vehicle travelled over 6km before eventually stopping in lane 4 inches from a head on collision. Miraculously, nobody was injured, and no damage was caused.”
The force went on to describe the driver as “confused”, StokeOnTrentLive reports.
The message read: “The confused driver has temporarily surrendered their driving licence to us, pending a full review by the DVLA and medical professionals.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their swift actions, 999 calls and for adhering to motorway signals.”
