Although scalp hair loss is a major concern for many women, more and more are seeking solutions for sparse eyebrows, too.
As thick, well-defined eyebrows remain fashionable, thinness in this area, whether caused by years of overplucking, natural ageing, or other factors, can be upsetting.
But it’s possible to reverse this with the right products, diet, and lifestyle hacks.
From hormonal changes to dietary deficiencies, the causes of eyebrow thinning are varied and complex, and it’s important to understand these if you hope to restore your brows.
New data has revealed that searches for “eyebrow loss with age” have surged by 200 per cent in the past three months, according to beauty brand Absolute Collagen.
The company also reported that queries about “sparse thin eyebrows” have doubled during the same period.
Eva Proudman, trichologist at Absolute Collagen, identified several key factors behind this widespread concern, explaining that a myriad of controllable and uncontrollable factors play their part.
“Ageing and menopausal changes in the body can play a huge role in hair loss,” the expert explained.
“Your hormones fluctuate during menopause, causing oestrogen and progesterone to decrease.”

Oestrogen is particularly beneficial for the hair as it helps keep hair in the ‘growing phase’ for longer,” Eva revealed.
The trichologist also highlighted dietary factors, explaining that your food choices can directly impact your eyebrow growth.
In light of this, she advised: “Try to maintain a balanced diet, specifically foods that include high levels of Vitamin D, selenium, and zinc – such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, fish, and red meat.”
The experts at Water’s Edge Dermatology identified additional causes for eyebrow thinning, warning that repeated tweezing can damage hair follicles and impair growth.
They cautioned that this change may be permanent if enough damage is done, stating: “If the follicles become scarred, the hair may not grow back.”
Other contributing factors include thyroid disorders, pregnancy, nutrient deficiencies, autoimmune diseases and certain medications.
It’s important to remember that, as well as their aesthetic appeal, brows boast “important functions”. Not only crucial for facial expressions, the hairs also help to stop sweat, dirt and debris from falling into the eyes.
Offering advice to those seeking solutions, Eva provided her four top tips for combating thinning brows and “promoting hair growth”.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
Leave them alone
When it comes to eyebrow hair loss, one of the most “common culprits” is a lifetime of over-plucking.
The trichologist advised women not to launch a tweezer or wax attack on their brows, warning that “over time the hair will not be able to regenerate”.
Consider your diet
The expert recommended consuming more protein-rich foods, including lean meats, fish, and beans. This supports hair growth from the inside out.
Those with thin brows may also want to invest in collagen supplements, as these provide the amino acids needed to build keratin.
Another “vital” nutrient is Vitamin D, which supports the creation of new follicles and helps to regulate the immune system.
Vitamin B complex supplements can also be “instrumental in maintaining good hair health”.
Try topical treatments
“There are now several eyebrow and lash serums available that can effectively promote hair growth,” Eva noted, suggesting products containing keratin, peptides, and soy protein.
As always, before investing in supplements or topical treatments, consult your GP, who can give tailored advice and instructions.
Top up with makeup
While makeup can’t provide long-lasting results, it can provide an almost instant solution.
If you’re looking to boost your brow game with “immediate” results, the expert advised using eyebrow pencils and volumising brow gels to create a fuller appearance.
