‘Huge security scare’ as police foil suspected plot on King’s guards

Police have thwarted a suspected terrorist plot targeting soldiers who guard King Charles at Windsor, leading to heightened security measures at a nearby military barracks.

A 20-year-old man was initially detained in Slough last week on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and arson at the Salt Hill Activity Centre.

The arrest prompted an immediate security response at Victoria Barracks, home to the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, where military personnel were instructed not to leave the premises in uniform.

The security alert remained in effect for two days as authorities assessed the threat to soldiers stationed just a quarter of a mile from Windsor Castle.

Thames Valley Police initially arrested the suspect on Friday for unrelated offences before uncovering the alleged terror plot.

Whilst being held in custody on Sunday, June 1, he was re-arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts.

The investigation has now been transferred to Counter Terrorism Policing South East.

A source told The Sun: “The suspect is feared to have been plotting an attack. Police informed bosses at the barracks and measures were taken immediately despite him already being in custody.”

“It was a huge security scare”, the source continued.

They added that it was “in the interests of everyone’s safety” that precautions be taken.

The restrictions affected soldiers from the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, who are responsible for ceremonial duties including the Changing the Guard procession at Windsor Castle.

Authorities believe the suspect acted alone, with no additional arrests made in connection with the case.

Counter Terrorism Policing South East is leading the ongoing investigation into what they have characterised as a “lone actor” incident.

Thames Valley Police have increased patrols in the area to provide reassurance to local residents following the security alert.

The enhanced police presence aims to address community concerns sparked by the incident.

The identity of the 20-year-old suspect has not been released by police.

No further details about the nature of the alleged plot or the suspect’s motivations have been disclosed as the counter-terrorism investigation continues.
