A major UK music venue will be forced to shut its doors after nearly 20 years of hosting international stars. Motion, a venue at the heart of Bristol‘s nightlife scene, was told its lease would not be renewed in July on the Grade II listed building, which used to be a skate park in a former gasworks.
Motion submitted a bid to purchase the property, but after not receiving a response from the landowners, it launched a crowdfunding website to raise funds for a deposit on a new venue. It has set a target of £250,000, offering partygoers donation rewards such as lifetime passes or VIP experiences, and has so far reached just over £3,000.
The venue’s crowdfunder said: “What started as a skate park in a former gasworks has grown into one of the UK’s most respected venues, welcoming artists from around the world and generations of music lovers.
“More than just a club, Motion has been a home for creativity, community, and connection.
“By supporting Motion, you’re not just helping secure a new home; you’re investing in the future of Bristol’s music scene, preserving a vital cultural institution, and ensuring that independent nightlife continues to thrive in our city for years to come.”
Over the past two decades, Motion has hosted international stars such as The Chemical Brothers, Chase and Status, and Rudimental.
It was also named the Best Large Club by the DJ Mag in its Best of British Awards.
The venue will be hosting a series of closing parties starting on May 4, with the final ‘Last Dance’ event set for July 19.
