BUDAPEST (LifeSiteNews) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced that his government will designate Antifa as a terrorist organization, following President Donald Trump’s lead.
“Antifa is a terrorist organization,” Orbán said in an interview with state radio last Friday. “The time has also come in Hungary for organizations like Antifa to be classified as terrorist organizations, following the American example.”
Orbán cited the 2023 incident in which Ilaria Salis, an Italian Antifa activist, was arrested for allegedly assaulting participants of the annual far-right “Day of Honor” in Budapest.
“They have come to Hungary, beaten peaceful people in the streets, beaten some half to death,” Orbán said.
He added that Antifa activists can “go on to become MEPs, and from there they lecture Hungary on the rule of law.”
Salis was released from prison and transferred to house arrest in May 2024. In June that year, she was elected a member of the European Parliament, which granted her legal immunity and led to her release from house arrest.
Hungary is following the lead of U.S. President Donald Trump, who on Monday signed an order designating Antifa a “domestic terrorist organization” in order to crack down on the radical left in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk assassination.
His order directs all departments and agencies to “investigate, disrupt, and dismantle any and all illegal operations … conducted by Antifa” and its supporters.
Last Friday, the Netherlands also moved to label Antifa a terrorist group. A majority in the lower house of the Dutch parliament voted in favor of a motion to that effect. The sponsors said “that Antifa cells are also active in our country, threatening politicians, disrupting meetings, intimidating students and journalists, and not shying away from using violence.”
The motion only amounts to an official request to the government to declare Antifa a terrorist organization, and it remains to be seen if such a declaration is made.
