Whilst details remain limited at present, the City of Minneapolis confirmed via social media that they are aware of a shooting involving federal law enforcement officers in North Minneapolis on Wednesday evening.
“We are aware of reports of a shooting involving federal law enforcement in North Minneapolis. We are working to confirm additional details,” the city’s official X page posted on Wednesday night.
Furthermore, Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported, citing law enforcement sources, that the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. local time on Wednesday. He noted that the individual allegedly charged at the officers with a shovel.
The Department of Homeland Security on social media said in a statement enforcement officers were carrying out “a targeted traffic stop” when the shooting occurred around 6:50 p.m.
“As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick. Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.,” DHS said in a statement posted to X.
Earlier, local Fox9 News reported that at least two individuals had been shot, though it reported neither sustained life-threatening injuries. The outlet stated that both individuals had been shot in the leg by ICE officers.
Melugin reported that one person, a Venezuelan national, was in custody. Live video footage from the scene showed protesters surrounding federal law enforcement vehicles in the vicinity of the shooting.
There is a substantial police presence at the scene, though local law enforcement was reportedly not involved in the shooting.
A local reporter who witnessed ICE deploying in the home of a family interviewed a bystander.
She said the agents went inside the home and shot the husband.
“They went to a pregnant lady and her husband and her kids and they shot the husband. They went inside their home, they went inside their house, that’s all I know,” the unnamed woman said on the livestream
