The Conclave to choose a new pope started on Wednesday.
It was an incredibly historic moment as the College of Cardinals filed into the Sistine Chapel, and the doors closed to begin the process. They already had one vote with no pope after the first day, so we saw the black smoke as a signal. It’s unclear how long it will take, but it’s generally two to three days.
As New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan explained, they won’t be talking to the public until they make a decision. Then we’ll see the white smoke.
This is the day we enter the conclave and I’m about to go into the Domus Sanctae Marthae, named after St. Martha, who took care of hospitality for Jesus. We leave here and go over to the Sistine Chapel every day for prayers and voting, but this is where we reside. I won’t be able… pic.twitter.com/uO0zGdrwbo

But when CBS covered the story of the first day of the Conclave and spoke about how the Cardinals would not have any of their electronic devices, the wording they used to describe that had a lot of eyebrows going up and jaws dropping for a process that is so momentous to the Church.
CBS News papal contributor John Allen was explaining what they might be doing instead of scrolling Instagram while waiting for the papal election results.
“Most of them will tell you that while that’s going on, they’re sitting reading their breviary, that’s a book of prayers that clergy have, or praying a rosary, or doing, the one thing we know they’re not doing is checking Instagram because their devices have all been confiscated,” Allen said.
That was all fine. It was what CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil said in response.
CBS ON CONCLAVE: “The one thing we know they’re not doing is checking Instagram because their devices have all been confiscated.”

“I believe the kids call it ‘rawdogging’ if you’re going to go through a long period of time with no electronic device,” he explained.
Oh, my. People were a bit stunned by the remark, and I think it’s safe to say not amused by Dokoupil’s choice of words. Talk about disrespect.

What Dokoupil didn’t seem to understand was that the term also means having sex without protection, which is something you definitely don’t want to use in this context. If he did understand the term, that would be even worse. CBS had already driven its credibility into the ground with things like the edited “60 Minutes” interview of Kamala Harris. This lack of sense didn’t help them if they had a shred of credibility left.
Add another bad move to the list that CBS is racking up. And you wonder why the public doesn’t trust the media? Crazy things like this are high on the list.
