It’s an accepted tactic in partisan politics, most especially in presidential elections, that once a party has selected a candidate, the party will then unite behind that candidate and support them through the election. Part of the reason Kamala “Queen of Word Salads” Harris lost the 2024 election (whew!) is because the party’s primary voters did not select her; she was anointed by Party apparatchiks with the full support of whoever was running Joe Biden’s autopen at the time.
Her being a perfectly awful candidate had a lot to do with it, too.
The next primary election season should be more of the normal sort for Democrats, or whatever passes for normal with Democrats. They will, presumably, run their candidates through the normal primary election process, and at their national convention, the candidate will be announced. And, credit where credit is due, the Democrats have always been pretty good at uniting behind a candidate, and that’s no shock. Collectivism is in their nature, after all, whereas dealing with Republicans is a lot more like herding cats.
So when Clinton creature and Democrat strategist James Carville indicates he’ll support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the Democratic candidate for president, that’s no real surprise. What’s troubling is that some Democrats think she has a chance.
Democratic strategist James Carville said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “The Beat” that he would back Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for president if she won the nomination.
Host Ari Melber said, “Democrats are clearly still finding their way. When you ask voters here in a new poll, who’s the real face of the party, these are some of the names you see. Interesting that Harris comes in so low right now. Sanders’ number used to be higher. As you know, he’s got a base, but he’s up there in age. AOC is very young, also more famous on the internet side of things. I know this doesn’t mean much. I’m sure one part of your answer is, hey, you got an off-election-year poll that is asking a vague question, but what do you glean from this?”
Note that Ari Melber made this gobsmacker of a statement right there on MSNBC, in something called “The Beat,” before what was likely literally dozens of viewers. Talk about going out on a limb! But Carville was down for the moment.
Carville said, “It is utterly useless. The poll is of everybody. So, all the Republicans, all see is AOC on Fox. So, that’s the general public’s view. That’s not the Democratic view. It means nothing.”
He continued, “I don’t think the party is in nearly as bad shape as it’s being portrayed to be. Look, we lost an election. I don’t like the party. I don’t blame the party reputation for being low, but I think if AOC wants to run for president and she gets the nomination, then God bless you. You are the leader of the Democratic Party. I mean, whoever gets that nomination is gonna be it.”
He’s right about the poll, as he described it; even the most reputable poll this early in the game doesn’t mean much. Much farther along in the 2008 cycle, everyone knew the election would come down to Her Imperial Majesty Hillary I and New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, and we all know how that turned out; Mayor Giuliani didn’t make it far into the primaries, and Barack Obama, operating on the old maxim “Keep your friends close and your enemies, closer,” made Her Imperial Highness Secretary of State.

But imagine if that unlikely scenario were to be realized. Imagine AOC on the campaign trail. Imagine the human train wreck she might pick as her running mate. And imagine her being defenestrated in the first debate with someone like JD Vance.
It’s not completely impossible. The Democrats’ bench has as much depth as an ice cube tray, and about as much warmth. Unless there’s someone more reasonable to choose, like, say, a Josh Shapiro who isn’t Jewish, they are very likely to end up with a complete kook as their candidate. And so much better for whoever the GOP picks; after all, another old maxim applies: When your opponent is making a mistake, let him.
The Democrat Party has never been less popular as voters reject its globalist agenda.
