(LifeSiteNews) — The Italian government has introduced a bill restricting so-called “gender transitions” for minors.
The proposal was approved by the cabinet this week but still needs parliamentary approval before it becomes law. It will regulate interventions such as cross-sex hormone injections and puberty blockers for gender-confused individuals under 18.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government said in a statement that there is a need “to protect the health of minors” and introduce “effective data monitoring.”
The proposed regulation states that so-called “gender affirming medicines” will only be given to minors following specific protocols that are not yet known but are set to be drafted by the health ministry. These rules are expected to be significantly stricter than the current ones, but they must first be approved by a national ethics committee of pediatricians.
The bill would also introduce a national registry at the Italian Medicines Agency to ensure “the correct use of (these) medicines” and collect medical histories of each person undergoing such medical procedures.

Transgender activist Roberta Parigiani complained that “[t]his is a form of profiling of trans people, with all their sensitive data, in the hands of a government-nominated agency … it is extremely serious.”
She warned that additional hurdles and protocols may delay “gender-affirming medical care” for teenagers and pre-teens before they hit puberty.
“It’s not like you can wait one or two years,” Parigiani told Reuters.
Parigiani and other transgender activists’ insistence on “transitioning” children before puberty can only be seen as misguided or cruel. Studies have shown that 80 percent of children grow out of their gender dysphoria when they hit adulthood, and so-called “gender affirming care” can cause permanent physical and mental damage to individuals that often leaves them infertile for the rest of their lives.
Prime Minister Meloni is known for criticizing the LGBT lobby and gender ideology. During her time in power, she restricted same-sex couples’ adoption of children and made it illegal for Italian couples to acquire a baby via surrogacy abroad.
