Argentine President Javier Milei has hailed a “tipping point” as his party swept to victory in the South American nation’s midterm elections.
The maverick politician declared that his victory would now see the “construction of a great Argentina” begin.
La Libertad Avanza, President Milei’s party, won 40.84 per cent of the nationwide vote with 95 per cent of the ballots counted.
Following the victory, the leader took to the stage and addressed hundreds of supporters gathered in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires.
“Today we passed the tipping point – the construction of a great Argentina begins,” he triumphantly told the crowd.
The midterm vote of confidence from Argentinians trumped even La Libertad Avanza’s more modest hopes, previously considering 30 per cent to be an acceptable outcome.
In contrast, the Peronist opposition party, Fuerza Patria, secured just 31.67 per cent of ballots cast.
Sunday’s election has been tipped as a de facto referendum on President Milei’s maverick libertarian governing style, which he implemented upon taking office in December 2023.
