Joe Thompson has reportedly resigned from his position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota. Over his years in the office he served as head of the Fraud and Public Corruption section by designation of former United States Attorney Andrew Luger, as Acting United States Attorney by appointment of President Trump, and as First Assistant United States Attorney by designation of current United States Attorneuy Dan Rosen.
Joe began his career in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Souther District of Illinois. There he prosecuted pubilc corruption. He was recruited to Minnesota by Luger. Over the past five years he has led the prosecution of cases arising from the vast public-programs fraud committed under the administration of Governor Walz.
Joe was also recruited to serve in the investigation of President Biden for the illegal retention of classified documents by Special Counsel Robert Hur. Former Attorney Merrick Garland recuited Joe to assist Hur because of Joe’s stellar reputation in the Department of Justice. Joe somehow continued to fulfill his ongoing responsibilities in Minnesota at the same time.
For reasons I have stated repeatedly on Power Line and elsewhere, by my lights Thompson is a hometown hero. We owe him a debt of gratitude and convey our best wishes for success in his future endeavors. I also add this simple statement of thanks for a job well done and for the pleasure of dealing with him professionally.
