This should not have taken five years. From NBC,
Michigan ‘fake electors’ will not face a criminal trial, judge rules.
NBC quotes state district judge Kristen Simmons,
Simmons said the so-called “fake electors” were trying to seek redress after Trump’s 2020 election loss and attempted to perform their civic duties.
The prosecutors, which included the state attorney general, who brought this case should be disbarred.
MLive reports on the judge’s ruling,
She said the case was not about election interference but about fraud, which required an intent to commit a crime.
Remember the context: Biden was declared the winner of Michigan by a narrow margin, after an election night with reports of 4 a.m. ballot dumps in Detroit and election workers covering windows to prevent observers from seeing their work.
Just before the October 2024 election, NPR recounted the chaos from 2020, quoting Detroit elections chief Daniel Baxter.
“Someone made the bad call of putting cardboard up on the windows. When I discovered that I made sure it was removed,” he said.
Now he tells us. Mistakes were made. In 2024, Trump won Michigan, as he did in 2016, earning a record number of votes. Kamala Harris was unable to match the Biden vote total of 2020, falling some 70,000 votes short.
Today, NPR reports on the fate of similar cases around the nation,
In May, an Arizona judge sent that state’s so-called “fake elector” case back to a grand jury. The Nevada case is stuck in a jurisdictional appeal after a court dismissed the case last year. In Georgia, the Fulton County district attorney’s office is fighting to keep its prosecution alive after a court ruled that the DA’s office should be removed from the case.
The whole point of such prosecutions and the associated media coverage was to discourage Republicans from participating in the political process.
Mission accomplished!
