Princess Kate and Prince William showcased their competitive spirit during a visit to HMS Glasgow on Thursday.

The royal couple, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, attended the official naming ceremony of the vessel before engaging in some friendly rivalry onboard.

Prince William, 42, and Princess Kate, 43, have become known for their playful competitions during joint royal engagements, with their latest challenge putting their pipe-building skills to the test.

Following the ceremony, the royal couple met with apprentices from BAE Systems who delivered the vessel, the first of eight Type 26 anti-submarine frigates to be built in Glasgow.

During their pipe-building competition, Princess Kate got off to a quick start whilst Prince William spent more time chatting with others. He later claimed he didn’t know it was a race.

The Princess credited her pipe-building ability to years of experience playing with children’s toys, referencing her experience as mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Princess Kate appeared to have bested her husband in the competition.

However, just as she was being declared the winner, one of her pieces collapsed.

The Princess tried to maintain her composure as she attempted to catch the falling piece before bursting into laughter.

Prince William joined in the amusement from across the table.

“Perfectly timed,” the Prince teased his wife, highlighting the couple’s playful dynamic that has become a hallmark of their joint appearances.

This competitive spirit is nothing new for the royal couple, who often go head-to-head during joint outings.

Whether making cocktails, facing off in sailing races or rolling dough balls at a bakery, the pair enjoy friendly rivalry.

During a 2023 appearance on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast, hosted by Mike Tindall, Kate’s competitive nature became a topic of conversation.

“I’m not going to say you’re uber competitive,” Mike said before giving a telling nod.

Princess Kate replied coyly, “I’m not competitive at all.”
