Flights have been temporarily suspended at Krakow Airport in Poland as emergency services rush onto the runway. In a tweet from its X account, Krakow Airport said on Monday (August 18): “For safety reasons, flight operations to/from Krakow Airport are temporarily suspended. State services are taking action. Thank you for your understanding”.
Local media reports armed police and firefighters were on the runway. Spokeswoman for Kraków Airport, Monika Chylaszek, told Love Krakow that the situation at the airport required action by Poland’s Border Guard. She said flights would also resume “soon”.
Krakow John Paul II International Airport is the second-busiest airport in Poland for passenger volume after Warsaw Chopin Airport. It handled more than 11 million passengers in 2024, according to Polskie Radio 24.
Ryanair, Buzz, easyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2, Ryanair and British Airways all fly direct to Krakow from the UK.
A number of departures appeared to have been delayed at the flights hub on Monday morning, including to Varna, Copenhagen, Barcelona Girona and Cagliari.
Arrivals also saw delays, with flights from Copenhagen, Rimini, Edinburgh, Nice and Frankfurt subject to landings later than scheduled.
It was not immediately clear whether the delays were a result of the temporary suspension.
