As the investigation continues into the fatal shooting Wednesday of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, some congressmen say they think the killing might have been a “professional hit.”
The investigation of the killing and the manhunt for the perpetrator are ongoing. The FBI recently released an image of a “person of interest” who was on the scene of the assassination.
An award of up to $100,000 has been offered by the FBI for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The rifle thought to have been used to assassinate Kirk was found in a “wooded area where the shooter had fled,” according to the FBI.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., told reporters Thursday that he suspects the killing was a professional hit, given the apparent sophistication of the assassin’s techniques.
“It looks to me like this was a professional deal,” Comer said of the 200-yard rifle shot that killed Kirk, adding:
As someone who’s a gun owner, 200 yards away—that’s a long way away. And if he was able to climb a roof without being noticed, leave without being noticed, with 5,000 people there, the odds are that that was probably a professional deal, but hopefully, our law enforcement will catch the person, and justice will be served.

“Kash Patel will be on the Hill next week,” the Kentucky lawmaker said. “He’ll be testifying in front of the House Judiciary Committee. I’m sure a lot of members are going to ask questions and want an update, and I know that Patel will be ready and fully expect him to talk about that next week.”
Comer’s speculation on the circumstances of the Kirk assassination was echoed by Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C.
“What happened to the assassination, it’s a deeper subject, because that’s a professional hit,” Norman told reporters.
For now, it appears members of Congress are satisfied with how federal and local law enforcement are handling the case.
“I think, let’s like, kind of let law enforcement play things out. I mean, they haven’t even caught the guy,” Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., told The Daily Signal on Thursday.
Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., similarly told reporters, “I want the FBI and everyone at [the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] who’s doing the investigation now, they’ve got to do this, and they need to apprehend the murderer, the guy who is that guy, or whoever, assassinated Charlie,” when asked whether there should be a House investigation.
Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., told The Daily Signal in a statement, “I have confidence in President [Donald] Trump’s FBI, and I expect Congress will investigate this assassination.”
