A father of a three-year-old boy from Germany died in the collision and his mother is in critical condition. The boy was among 21 people injured and pulled from the derbis by a police officer, CNN Portugal has reported. Yesterday evening at around 6pm local time (5pm BST), Lisbon’s famous Gloria Funicular derailed and crashed.

Nationalities of those injured in the crash include four Portuguese, two Germans, two Spanish, one Korean, one Cape Verdean, one Canadian, one Italian, one French, one Swiss and one Moroccan. Among the injured are 12 women and seven men aged between 24 and 65, as well as a three-year-old boy

The Gloria funicular travels from Restauradores, a square in the middle of Lisbon, up to the picturesque area of Bairro Alto. It takes just three minutes to travel one-way. There are two carriages of the Gloria funicular, transporting over three million passengers each year, according to various Lisbon tourist guides.

Portuguese transport union Sitra said a man who worked for Carris, the company that operates the Gloria funicular, was killed in the crash. They said André Jorge Gonçalves Marques, who worked as a brake operator, was among the 17 people who died in Wednesday’s crash.

However, nationalities of the other victims have not yet been officially confirmed.

The UK Foreign Office has released a statement to BBC which says:

“We are aware of this incident in Lisbon and are in touch with the local authorities. We stand by to provide consular assistance if there are any affected British nationals.”
