National Highways has warned that the southbound carriageway will remain closed as crews work in the aftermath of this morning’s crash.
Traffic Officers and Area Teams are on site making efforts to clear the flood water; however, the collision caused “significant damage” to the central barrier.
Once the flooding has cleared, these teams will then work to repair the barrier before both sides can be reopened.
The Northbound carriageway has reopened.
In a statement online, they said: “The M66 southbound in Greater Manchester is closed southbound between the A56/A676 (Edenfield) and J1 (Walmersley) due to a multi-vehicle collision and flooding on the carriageway.
“As a result of the collision, there is also significant central reservation barrier damage.
“National Highways Traffic Officers and Area Teams are on scene working to clear the flood water. The barrier damage will be assessed and repaired once the flood water has cleared.”
