Man Shoots Georgia Veteran Affairs Clinic Employee, Gets Taken Down by Police – RedState

On Tuesday afternoon, officers in Jasper, GA, responded to reports of shots fired at the Veterans Affairs Clinic in the city, just 60 miles outside of Atlanta.

Authorities are investigating a shooting at a Veterans Affairs clinic in Jasper, Georgia, where police say a suspected gunman was shot and killed by officers after reports of gunfire at the facility.

According to the City of Jasper, officers with the Jasper Police Department were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. to a report of shots fired at the VA Clinic on East Church Street.

The officers were able to locate the suspect still at the clinic. Officers confronted the suspect, and shots were fired during the encounter.

When officers arrived, they located the suspected shooter at the scene. Police said the individual was confronted by responding officers and shot during the encounter. Jasper Chief of Police Matt Dawkins has said the man, described only a resident of the city, was shot outside the clinic.

The person who was shot, who reportedly is an employee at the clinic, was airlifted to a hospital; their condition is unknown.

Officials said one victim was found at the scene and taken for medical treatment before being airlifted to a hospital. Authorities have not released the victim’s condition. A spokesperson for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs confirmed that the victim was an employee at the clinic.

Dawkins called the situation “eye-opening.”

“We don’t have this often,” he said, before saying it was a “significant event” for the city.

Earlier, CBS News Atlanta was told by the FBI in Atlanta that it was aware of the shooting and was assessing whether federal involvement would be necessary. Dawkins confirmed that the FBI would be investigating the shooting.
