Man stuns diners by proposing to girlfriend in fried chicken shop | UK | News

The unidentified man got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend at Southern Fried Chicken in Colchester, Essex, at 3am.

The unexpected proposal was filmed by fellow customer Jake Tokley, 19, who was enjoying a kebab with a mate when he spotted the romantic act.

He described seeing a man in a white shirt get down on one knee and propose, to which the surprised woman swiftly said yes.

The teenager even managed to grab a brief 16-second snippet of the proposal as it unfolded, which he has shared on social media where it has become viral.

Reflecting on the moment, Jake said: “It came out of nowhere completely.

“The whole shop fell silent and as she said ‘yes’ a massive cheer erupted from outside the shop, inside the shop, and from behind the counter.

“I was absolutely shocked as to the nature of it – it was incredibly funny.”

Later that day, Jake, who works as a customer service assistant at the takeaway but was visiting after a night out, decided to post the footage on TikTok.

He thought it would be “funny to share with others” and had a hunch the clip would “attract some views”.

The video, captioned “no way we witnessed a genuine proposal at a kebab shop”, has garnered 953,000 views with 129,000 people having liked the video.

Jake from Colchester expressed his disbelief at the widespread attention the video received, saying: “I can’t believe the views the video has received.

“Everyone has seemed to have the same confused reaction to what happened as me.”

Reactions to the viral footage included one commenter quipping: “And that’s a wrap.”

Another contributed to the online buzz by stating: “Kebab is more than food.”

Yet another viewer chimed in with: “They did it for the free food 100 per cent.”

Despite not knowing the young couple, thought to be in their early 20s, Jake sent his best wishes: “I’d say congratulations and I hope they didn’t mind me showing it to nearly a million people.”

A representative from Southern Fried Chicken joined in with a warm “congratulations” directed at the newly engaged pair.

Councillor Amy Kirkby-Taylor of Castle ward couldn’t contain her delight, remarking: “it is wonderful, it is lovely.”

She mused over the unique proposal setting: “It is one of those moments, definitely not where I would have chosen to do it but hats off to them and I wish them the best of luck.”

Highlighting the video’s feel-good factor, she added: “The fact the video has gone viral, people love good news.”

The unforgettable proposal took place on May 25.
