Man who threw boy from Tate Modern balcony found guilty of attacking two nurses in mental hospital

The man who threw a six-year-old boy from a Tate Modern balcony has been found guilty of attacking two nurses in a mental hospital.

Jonty Bravery, 24, kicked a female nurse in the thigh and “clawed across” another’s face at Broadmoor hospital, the high-security psychiatric facility in Berkshire where he is held.

One nurse was left with blood dripping down her cheek following the attack and was taken to hospital.

The incident, in which he assaulted nurses Linda McKinlay and Kate Mastalerz, occurred in September 2024.

The 24-year-old did not attend his trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Prosecutor Tom Heslop said Bravery is kept in a room with only a mattress and is monitored by three staff members “24 hours a day, seven days a week”.

“At around 9.30 at night, Mr Bravery asked to go to the toilet,” he said.

“After he used the bathroom, he attempted to climb a ledge and throw himself from it.”

The nurses then intervened, put him back onto his mattress and turned him onto his back.

However, Mr Heslop says Bravery “kicked out towards Ms Mastalerz”, hitting her in the thigh.

He then “clawed across” Ms McKinlay’s face, leaving her with blood dripping down her cheek, the prosecutor added.

The court was also shown body footage in which the nurses struggled with Bravery on the floor before others rushed in to help.

A panicked staff member can even be heard shouting, “Jesus Christ, do something”.

“Jonty climbed up trying to get onto the windowsill,” Ms McKinlay said. “We were trying to coax Jonty down. We didn’t want him to hurt himself.

“He was screaming and shouting and kicking. We shouted for assistance.

“He attacked my face; he was clawing at my face. My eye and my face were all scratched. In the aftermath, I was very shaken. In all my years of being in Broadmoor, I’ve never been attacked.”

Ms Mastalerz, who suffered a bruised thigh in the incident, said she started “shouting for help” when Bravery began kicking and scratching.

She described the incident as a “very stressful situation”.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring found Bravery guilty of both charges and adjourned sentencing until January 8, requesting an update on his current mental health condition.

It is not the first time Bravery has had his sentence extended after attacking employees at the hospital.

In 2020, he was jailed for another 14 weeks after he attacked more Broadmoor Hospital staff.

He admitted to punching nursing assistant Sarah Edwards in the head and face, pulling her hair and then biting rehabilitation therapist assistant Maxwell King on his finger.

Jonty Bravery was sentenced to life for attempted murder after throwing a child from the 10th floor of the Tate Modern in 2019

Bravery is currently serving a life sentence after throwing a French boy from the 10th story at the Tate Modern museum in London.

At the time, he told officers he carried out the attack because he wanted to be on the news.

CCTV footage showed Bravery looking over the edge of the 10th-floor balcony, before seizing the child by the limbs and throwing him over the edge.

The child miraculously survived the fall but suffered life-changing injuries, such as a bleed on the brain.

Bravery, who has autism, also told police he heard voices in his head telling him to kill or injure someone.

He said he wanted to highlight his frustration over the treatment of his mental health problems.
