Meghan Markle is allegedly facing an “unthinkable” dilemma regarding her decision on whether to join her husband, Prince Harry, in the UK this summer, a royal expert has claimed. The Duke of Sussex, who was in Britain this week for his trial against the Daily Mail’s publisher, will travel back again this summer to kick off the one-year-to-go event for the Invictus Games in 2027, which will be held in Birmingham.
Harry’s wife has not set foot in Britain since 2022, when she attended the late Queen’s funeral in London. Now, a royal expert claimed the Duchess of Sussex’s trip back to the UK will be more or less unavoidable and that the whole visit will create a major royal “dilemma” for one key reason.
Veteran royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliam also added that a Sussex trip back to the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet could also provide a boost to the already damaged relations between the two sides.
He told the Mirror: “It would be unthinkable for Meghan not to appear at Invictus because it would look like she was hiding away, and she will stand by Harry no matter what.”
But he added: “The Games are a major dilemma for the royals, and it’s a dilemma that the Sussexes have created themselves. Because Harry founded the Invictus Games, it’s up to him – although maybe not officially – what happens with it.
“The end of the event clashes with Queen Camilla’s 80th birthday, but that isn’t a reason for Charles not to open the Games if he intends to, and there is a very good case for him doing so because he is Head of the Armed Forces and it’s a major military charity event.
“At the moment, though, it’s completely unclear how the Royal Family are going to respond, given the Sussexes put three nuclear bombs under Buckingham Palace with Spare, the Oprah Winfrey interview and their Netflix series.”
However, Mr Fitzwilliams added that if Harry and Meghan ever want to salvage their reputation with the royals and the British public, they should make their next appearance in the UK alongside their two children.
He said: “There is so much hostility over here towards the Sussexes, and if they’re hoping to smooth the path with Charles, a reunion with the grandchildren would be an obvious way of doing that.
“I don’t think the King will be involved in anything to do with the Games this summer, but I do think it’s a real possibility that he will see Harry and his grandchildren, and that probably means seeing Meghan too.”
The last time Charles saw his grandchildren from across the pond was in the summer of 2022, when the Sussexes came to England once again for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
