Met Office issues new 72-hour warning for 9 areas | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued a new weather warning for rain, which is set to remain in place for three days. A yellow alert is in place for parts of Scotland from 12pm on Wednesday until 12pm on Friday, with the weather agency warning of floods. Heavy rain is expected over hills, leading to a “small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings”.

The Met Office added: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life. Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services. There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads. There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.

“Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.”

Up to 120mm of rain could accumulate over the highest ground exposed to the brisk southeasterly winds. In other areas further inland, 30-60mm is expected. Flooding may occur as the rain falls on ground where snow is thawing.

The Met Office added: “In addition, rain will fall increasingly as snow over high ground, especially on Thursday and into Friday, adding to the uncertainty as to how quickly rivers may respond downstream.”

The affcted regions are: Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, and Highlands and Eilean Siar.

The Met Office explained: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”
