Met Office issues thunderstorms warning with 100 UK areas hit – full list | Weather | News

Parts of Britain are likely to be blasted by heavy thunderstorms today as the Met Office has warned of “danger to life” in some areas in the country. According to the Met Office, 100 places in the country may face flooding and travel disruption as 80mm (3.1 inches) of rain is expected to fall in just a few hours.

According to the National Weather Agency, the Northwest of England and most of Scotland are likely to be the worst impacted with heavy rain and hail to last in these areas on Saturday afternoon. The Met Office website reads: “Areas of heavy rain and some thunderstorms will develop over Wales, western and northern England and Scotland on Saturday. This area will gradually move northwards during the day, with southern parts of the warning area improving, though then with a risk of isolated smaller-scale thunderstorms forming. A corridor of 15-30mm of rain is likely, with some areas perhaps seeing 30-50 mm falling in a few hours. Event rainfall could reach 60-80mm in some locations.”

For each of the two weather warnings, the Met Office website adds: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.” Both warnings end at 6pm when the rain slowly shifts north.

Katharine Smith, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said: “There is a risk of significant and localised surface water flooding impacts in parts of England.

“Environment Agency teams have ensured rivers and watercourses are clear ahead of the storms and stand ready to support local authorities in their response to surface water flooding.

“We urge people not to drive through flood water as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car.”
