A migrant has been convicted of sexual assault after evading immigration authorities for three years. Babu Mariyadasan, 48, entered Britain from India in 2019 after being granted his tourist visa. After overstaying his visa, he was placed on immigration bail but managed to dodge the Home Office for three years.
During this time, he was accused and convicted of groping a woman’s breast in East Ham, East London, the Sun reports. The anonymous victim said she was left traumatised after the random attack and can no longer go out when it’s dark. She said: “It was disgusting. It was shocking. It was traumatising. When I asked him to stop, he started shouting at me. He started to scream at me.
“Before, I described myself as a confident person. I no longer walk around when it is dark.”
Mariyadasan, who does not speak English, fled after the assault, but the victim managed to take a picture of him and show it to the police.
He denied the offence but was found guilty last month and sentenced to five months in jail.
Prosecutor Pamela Muniya told Snaresbrook Crown Court that he will likely be detained and deported.
Under the UK Borders Act 2007, a non-British citizen sentenced to 12 months or more in prison for an offense is subject to automatic deportation, though they can appeal the decision on human rights grounds.
The Home Office considers deportation for less severe offenses on a case-by-case basis, considering factors such as the individual’s circumstances and ties to the UK.
