NFL quarterback Justin Fields witnesses to Christian faith after major comeback victory

(LifeSiteNews) — NFL quarterback Justin Fields witnessed to his faith in Jesus Christ after a 15-point comeback against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

During a press conference Fields, who was benched last week due to poor play but started Sunday’s game, thanked God for His generosity.

“When I was out on the field … I was … about to start crying, but not because we won, just because of the goodness of God, and how everything works for the greater good,” he said holding back tears.

Fields, 26, is the starting quarterback of the New York Jets. The team started the season 0-7 until their lone win this past weekend.

The Jets’ owner joined in on the growing criticism of Fields earlier this month when he said, “If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.” Fields opened up to the media about placing his trusting in God after the loss last week. He notably did not criticize his coach or the team’s owner.

“I’ve always asked God to give me an opportunity and a platform to spread His word and sometimes it doesn’t play out the way you always plan it,” he said. “God’s been with me through the ups and downs, and I’m probably at a low right now, and I think the old me would feel some certain type of way. But it’s just now, like, my faith is so rooted in Christ to where it’s like, like I told you guys earlier this week, nothing can break me.”

Before the NFL, Fields attended the University of Georgia and Ohio State University, where he racked up an impressive 31-5 overall record while being named a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2019 and 2020. He was the 11th overall pick in the 2021 draft, spending several years with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and now the New York Jets, though he has had some difficulty replicating the success he had at the collegiate level.

Fields opened up about the difficulties he had following the loss last week. During the press conference Sunday, he said he was crying in his closet during the week but that he didn’t allow that to deter him heading into the game against the Bengals.

“I’m going to lead the same, and again, just try to continue to spread that message of how good God is, and no matter what I go through in life, I know I’m strong enough to handle it. I know He’s strong enough to help me handle it,” he said Sunday.

Fields’ 1-7 Jets trailed the now 3-5 Bengals 31-16 heading into the fourth quarter Sunday. They scored a whopping 23 points in the final 15 minutes of play, with the help of two 2-point conversions, to walk away with a 39-38 victory.

“It seemed like the world was kind of crashing in around him, and he just went out there with football in his mind, locked in, played a hell of a game and led us to the win,” Jets safety Isaiah Oliver said of Fields. “He was vocal on the sideline all week during practice. None of that changed who he was.”

Fields thanked his teammates and family members after the win.

“I had gotten a text from my sister, my stepmom. It’s an encouraging text. ‘Keep going, keep spreading the faith,’” he said. “That is a sign from God for me to keep going. I’m in the right place … God is real. God is good.”

Fields finished with the game with his best statistical performance of the season, completing 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown. The Jets take on the 2-6 Cleveland Browns next week at home.
