The Met Office confirmed that “severe geomagnetic storms” were observed, resulting in “widespread auroras visible across the UK, with reports extending as far south as northern Italy.”
Solar activity expected to decline, but lights may still be visible
While the solar activity is anticipated to decrease, the Met Office suggests that the Northern Lights may still be visible in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
The spectacular aurora was triggered by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), a phenomenon in which the Sun emits enormous clouds of particles that interact with the Earth’s atmosphere.
The enchanting colors of the Northern Lights are produced when the solar particles collide with oxygen and nitrogen gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Oxygen atoms emit a mesmerizing green hue, which is the color most frequently associated with the Aurora Borealis. In contrast, nitrogen atoms produce captivating shades of purple, blue, and pink.
