The mother of Nottingham attack victim Barnaby Webber has told GB News about her “disgust” after it was revealed murderer Valdo Calocane was not previously sectioned because of his race.
During the inquiry, it was revealed that the Nottingham killer, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia back in 2020, was not sectioned by the authorities because officials were worried too many black males had already been admitted.
Calocane had failed to be admitted into a psychiatric hospital after he tried to break into a flat next door while experiencing a pyschotic episode in May 2020.
Students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, were killed after being stabbed to death by Calocane in his horrific spree of attacks three years later.
Three others were left seriously injured following the violent attack which took place in Nottingham’s city centre almost three years ago.
Now, an inquiry, led by ex-judge Deborah Taylor, will search for answers as to what happened before, during and after the fatal attacks carried out by Calocane in June 2023.
Asked for her reaction on the revelation her son’s killer was not sectioned because of his race, Emma Webber told GB News: “It’s just disgust, isn’t it?
“Why would colour – why would ethnic minority come into anything like that?
“If you’re dangerous to yourself, but almost more importantly, if you’re dangerous to the public, then you’re dangerous and you’re not there to tick a box for somebody.”
She added ethnicity was a “distraction that can’t happen” in such a case.
“This is about how our police forces and how our hospitals and our services are failing, irrespective of what colour you are,” she added, blasting the revelation as “distasteful and disgusting”.
The inquiry continues.
