A member of the Belgian Royal Family has undergone cancer treatment for the sixth time in 11 years. The Belgian Palace has confirmed that the country’s former monarch, King Albert II, has undergone cancer treatment after he was spotted recently with facial scars.
The former monarch, 91, appeared in photographs last week at a reception with a scar on his face running from his nose to his upper lip. This resulted in a statement from the Palace, in which they confirmed he had undergone a preventative procedure for skin cancer.
It was not confirmed when the surgery took place.
Despite stepping down as King, and facing multiple health challenges, Albert and his wife Queen Paola, 85, have still carried out public duties over the last 12 years.
However, Albert’s public appearance last week comes after he has previously been missing from public engagements over the past five months, which could be a result of this recent health challenge.
