The family of 84-year-old Arizona resident Nancy Guthrie is living every family’s worst nightmare this week, with Mrs. Guthrie being reported missing after last being seen around 9:45 pm local time on Saturday by one of her kids.
When Mrs. Guthrie, who is “Today Show” co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, did not show up for Sunday church, a missing persons report was filed, reportedly by a concerned family member.
Sheriff Nanos will hold a media briefing this morning at 9:00 a.m regarding the search and investigation underway for Nancy Guthrie.

A statement from Savannah Guthrie was read on the “Today Show” Monday morning:
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
In early reports, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated that they believed a crime had been committed, that it was not simply a case of Mrs. Guthrie voluntarily heading out for a trip or wandering off:
Guthrie has mobility issues and is without key medication, according to Sheriff Chris Nanos.
“This is not dementia-related. She is as sharp as a tack,” Nanos said. “The family wants everybody to know this isn’t somebody who just wandered off.”

“She did not leave on her own. We know that,” he noted.

Later in the day, however, Nanos revealed an even more chilling detail, saying that he believed that Mrs. Guthrie was kidnapped while she was asleep in her bed:
The disappearance is very disturbing to the community, Nanos told MS NOW — formerly known as MSNBC — on Monday, saying investigators believe she was removed from her house against her will.
“You have an 84 year old lady who is home in bed, asleep in the middle of night (and) disappears,” Nanos said. “That’s not Tucson and that’s not who we are here.”
Nanos also indicated that he had sent homicide detectives to a scene he described as “concerning,” even though there was no body.
“It’s rare for me to call out our homicide team unless we have a body,” Nanos stated during an MS NOW interview.
It goes without saying that the family has to be beside themselves with fear, worry, and anxiousness. As a caregiver to my 82-year-old mom, I tuck her in each night before going to bed and kiss her on the forehead. The thought of someone hurting my mom and taking her away from us, especially if she was in her most vulnerable state in the bedroom, asleep and feeling safe… man, I don’t even want to think about it. It makes me feel absolutely feral.
I pray Mrs. Guthrie is found safe.
