From ABC news,
Poland reinstates border controls with Germany and Lithuania to discourage asylum-seekers:
Poland has reinstated border controls with Germany and Lithuania to address concerns over illegal migration.
As Richard Fernandez (Wretchardthecat) noted on Twitter (X),
Once one country in Europe opened its borders to the outside free internal travel had to end.
Which is exactly why a country like America must have a single, uniform immigration policy. Because when a single state (California) or large city (Los Angeles) decides to have its own, separate open immigration policy, all 50 states have the same open immigration policy.
ABC News reports,
The reinstated controls, which began overnight Sunday, will last for an initial period of 30 days, though authorities have not ruled out extending them, according to the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration.
“Illegal migration is simply a crime,” Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said Sunday during a news conference.
Why, yes. Yes, it is.
The European Union has a visa-free travel area, known as Schengen, that allows citizens of most member states to travel easily across borders for work and pleasure.
Not just citizens. Anyone, legal or otherwise, can travel freely within the zone. Crossing borders by automobile is pretty much like crossing a state line in America. Internal airline flights, like from Amsterdam to Rome, operate exactly like domestic flights do within the United States.
So, if you are an EU nation, like Poland or Hungary, and you don’t want illegal immigrants, you don’t really have a choice. You can bar the front door, but the side and back doors are supposed to be kept open.
We’ll see what happens in 30 days.
