A Greater Manchester Police sergeant was hospitalised on Friday evening after his legs were ‘crushed’ in a hit-and-run incident, according to the force.
The terrifying collision occurred on Frodsham Street in Rusholme, Manchester, around 6pm. The unnamed officer was pinned between the offending vehicle and another car.
The driver reportedly fled the scene in the car, which has not been further described. In a statement, GMP confirmed the officer was taken to hospital with leg injuries, but thankfully, they are ‘not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing’
He is currently being supported by colleagues. On Friday night, a 41-year-old man was arrested and remained in police custody for questioning.
He was detained on suspicion of section 18 assault, dangerous driving and failing to stop, the Manchester Evening News has reported.
A senior GMP officer highlighted the incident as ‘a reminder of the risks that our frontline officers face daily as they go about their duties to keep communities safe and respond to incidents’.
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker confirmed a full investigation was now underway ‘to pursue justice’ for the injured officer. Residents living near the area reported a significant police response in the aftermath of the incident, including a police helicopter circling overhead.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement that they apprehended a suspect following the harrowing incident on Frodsham Street, Rusholme, at 6pm on Friday, May 30, which left the GMP sergeant with serious injuries.
The statement from the force detailed: “We have made an arrest after a collision on Frodsham Street, Rusholme, at 6pm tonight (Friday 30 May 2025), which resulted in a GMP sergeant being injured.
“It was reported that a car reversed into the officer several times, crushing his legs between two vehicles, before making off from the scene.
“The sergeant has been taken to hospital for treatment of injuries to his legs, which are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing, and he is being supported by colleagues.
“A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault, dangerous driving and failure to stop and remains in custody at this time.”
While the identity of the suspect remains undisclosed, ACC Parker commented on the gravity of the situation: “This incident is a reminder of the risks that our frontline officers face daily as they go about their duties to keep communities safe and respond to incidents.
“Assaults on officers are wholly unacceptable and take them away from being able to serve and protect the public, which is what they come to work each shift to do.
“An investigation is now underway, and we’d like to thank those who have already come forward with information about the incident, and to those in the area who may have been impacted by the emergency response.
“Our priority is the wellbeing of the injured officer, and I wish him a speedy recovery as we look to pursue justice.
