Polish historian says he addressed ‘injustice’ of Latin Mass restrictions after meeting with Pope Leo

(LifeSiteNews) — A historian who accompanied the Polish president to the Vatican to meet Pope Leo XIV said that he addressed the “injustice” of restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) in talks with Vatican prelates.

On September 5, the pope met with the newly elected Polish president, Karol Nawrocki, who was accompanied by an entourage. Among Nawrocki’s companions was Polish historian and journalist Sławomir Cenckiewicz, who is known for being a traditional Catholic.

After the audience with the pope and other high-ranking Vatican prelates, including Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, Cenckiewicz said that he had addressed the unjust treatment of traditional Catholics due to restrictions on the TLM.

“I paid filial homage to the Vicar of Christ,” the Polish historian wrote in a Facebook post.

“I also met Cardinal Parolin and several prelates from the papal circle,” he added.

“Staying in the papal apartments, having the opportunity to spend a longer time in several apartments where St. Pius X lived, worked, and resided, and admiring the paintings of the great masters—El Greco, Dürer, and Caravaggio—was a great experience for me! Deo gratias!”

“P.S. And if you think that during my two visits to the Vatican and my private conversations with prelates, there was no mention of Catholic Tradition and the injustice of Traditionis custodes, you are mistaken,” he concluded.

In July 2021, Pope Francis published his controversial motu proprio Traditionis Custodes that significantly restricted the celebration of the pre-Vatican II form of the Roman Rite as well as the other traditional Sacraments.

Numerous orthodox prelates, including Cardinal Raymond Burke, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, and Cardinal Robert Sarah, as well as Cardinal Kurt Koch, have criticized Traditionis Custodes and expressed their hope that Pope Leo would lift the restrictions on the TLM and allow all Catholics to receive the traditional Sacraments without obstacles.
