President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is commuting the seven-year prison sentence for former New York Representative George Santos (R).
George Santos was somewhat of a “rogue,” but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison. I started to think about George when the subject of Democrat Senator Richard “Da Nang Dick” Blumenthal came up again. As everyone remembers, “Da Nang” stated for almost twenty years that he was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having endured the worst of the War, watching the Wounded and Dead as he raced up the hills and down the valleys, blood streaming from his face. He was “a Great Hero,” he would leak to any and all who would listen — And then it happened! He was a COMPLETE AND TOTAL FRAUD. He never went to Vietnam, he never saw Vietnam, he never experienced the Battles there, or anywhere else. His War Hero status, and even minimal service in our Military, was totally and completely MADE UP. This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN! George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!
This is an apt comparison. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) is a total fraud and should have been expelled in disgrace when a 2010 New York Times investigation revealed he had lied about his Vietnam service. Fifteen years later, Blumenthal remains in the Senate, doing illustrious work like trying to grill Attorney General Pam Bondi on how she had an oath to uphold the law (so rich), and filing Hatch Act charges against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
After Santos was elected in 2022 as a Republican congressman for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, he immediately made a reputation for himself, and not in a good way. It didn’t take long for the long knives to come out against him — especially from Democrats. An ethics investigation was mounted, and it revealed that he had lied to the Federal Elections Commission, misrepresented his biography, and committed wire fraud through charging his donors’ credit cards without their permission. In 2023, both Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to expel Santos. In August 2024, Santos pleaded guilty to the charges of wire fraud and identity theft, and was sentenced to over seven years in prison for his crimes.
Fast forward to August 2025. Our editor Becca Lower reported on an interview Trump did with Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty. Finnerty asked about a series of convicts and ne’er-do-wells, and whether Trump might consider pardoning them. Trump answered:
About Santos, Trump said, “He lied like hell,” adding that while he didn’t personally know the former congressman, and “might have met him,” “[h]e was 100 percent for Trump.” The president jabbed “the other side” and the media for not trying harder to ferret out Santos’ alleged misdeed before he was elected. He added that no one has asked him to pardon Santos.

Perhaps it was after this interview that the wheels started to turn. Whatever the reason, two months later, Santos has now received the good news about his fate.
Note that a commutation is not the same as a pardon. While a pardon completely absolves one’s criminal record and restores all constitutional rights to the one pardoned, a commutation reduces and in some cases absolves the time required to serve the sentence, but the subject still maintains a criminal record.
