Unless you’ve been socked away on a desert island for the past 12 hours or so, you’ve likely heard about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA-14) making the announcement on Friday night that she will retire from Congress in January. RedState shared her public letter in full, but here’s the part that pertains to President Donald Trump, who has now given his two cents on the matter. Back to that in a minute.
RedState’s Joe Cunningham laid out the background on MTG’s decision to leave:
However, according to insiders, the president sent Greene polling that indicates she can’t win, strongly suggesting she shouldn’t run. That, in turn, appears to have increased her already tense relationship with other Republican leaders like Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-4). In her letter, she blasted “Establishment Republicans” and accused Trump of organizing a primary against her.
“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” she wrote. “And in turn, be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me. It’s all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”
Cunningham, in a follow-up column on Saturday morning, noted that we are already seeing the usual behavior from the Left of “respect” for Republicans who even slightly display disagreement with Trump.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene Announces Resignation From Congress
Early Saturday morning, as I mentioned, the president reacted to MTG’s news, unsurprisingly, in a post on his Truth Social account.

“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown, because of PLUMMETING Poll Numbers, and not wanting to face a Primary Challenger with a strong Trump Endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!),” he writes, “has decided to call it ‘quits.'”
“Her relationship with the WORST Republican Congressman in decades, Tom Massie of Kentucky, also known as Rand Paul Jr. because he votes against the Republican Party (and really good legislation!),” he adds, “did not help her. For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD.”
Here, though, Pres. Trump softens his tone at the end, writing, “Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country! President DJT.”
On his way to a golf course in the past hour (the Courses at Andrews AFB), he stopped by a gaggle of White House reporters for some questions—and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s name came up.
Some of what he said was similar to the gist of the social media post, but watch his answer to the end, where there’s a marked change in tone like the close of the Truth Social comment.

In another exchange with the media, he was asked whether he would mend his relationship with someone (possibly Greene; it’s unintelligible in the clip), like he seems to have recently with former DOGE advisor and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.

It sounds like he meant Rep. Greene, though, from what Pres. Trump told NBC News in a Saturday morning interview via phone: (emphasis mine)
In a brief phone interview with NBC News, the president said, “It’s not going to be easy for her” to revive her career in politics, though he added, “I’d love to see that.”
In the meantime, Trump said, “she’s got to take a little rest.”
…
Asked if he believed he could overcome his differences with Greene, Trump said in the interview, “I can patch up differences with anyone.”
We shall see, in time, whether the much-quoted line from a famed Robert Frost poem, the sardonic, “Good fences make good neighbors,” is a prediction of the arm’s length relationship Trump and others, including Greene, that might be needed to keep the peace within the Republican Party heading into 2026.
Stay tuned, readers.
