Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s “most damaging moment” since stepping down as senior working royals has been pinpointed by a royal commentator, and it is not any of their interviews or business ventures. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit the Royal Family in 2020 and have sent various bombshells around the world with their claims about their life within the Firm.
Harry and Meghan have given a string of interviews following their reloction to the US, making allegations against the royals. They also made a docuseries on Netflix, and the Duke released an explosive memoir, Spare. The bombshell claims against Firm members and personal revelations they included in their tell-alls are believed to have hit their popularity, particularly in the UK. But despite all this, it was a TV show mocking them that had the biggest impact on the public’s perception, according to a royal commentator. Harry and Meghan made headlines in February 2023 after they starred in South Park’s second episode, titled The Worldwide Privacy Tour, of the series’ Season 26.
The episode centred around the fictional Prince of Canada and his wife, who have been largely interpreted as a parody of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who travel to the small town of Colorado.
South Park’s episode followed the couple as they strived for a normal, low-key life. They attempted to do this while on a global tour, audibly demanding privacy.
Royal commentator Daisy McAndrew said in a new documentary on Channel 5: “The thing I think damaged Harry and Meghan almost more than anything else was having the mickey taken with the Privacy Tour [South Park] episode.”
He added on “Harry and Meghan: Royal Hypocrites” as per the Mirror: “When they were the butt of jokes with the cartoon, showing them as completely hypocritical going on a tour to ask for privacy, but meanwhile baring all on all sorts of late-night TV shows.”
It comes after a busy few days for the Duchess of Sussex, who was spotted in New York with her husband, Prince Harry, on Thursday and Friday to attend two very special events.
On Thursday, Harry and Meghan attended the Project Healthy Minds Gala, where they received an award for their humanitarian work.
The Duke warned that social media’s impact on children is “one of the most pressing issues of our time.”
Meghan added that the couple often discussed how they would protect their own children, six-year-old Archie and Lilibet, four, as they grow older.
On Friday, the Duke and Duchess attended the Project Healthy Minds World Mental Health Day Festival.
Harry and Meghan: Royal Hypocrites is on Channel 5 on Saturday at 8.55pm
