Prince William may have only been a teenager when his parents King Charles, who was Prince of Wales at the time, and Princess Diana divorced, but many who knew him knew just how wise he was. As well as being Diana’s son, Prince William was also believed to be her confidante, and had seen her during some of her lowest moments.
One of these moments was after her divorce from Charles, which was finalised in 1996 – four years after they separated. This was believed to be a sad time for the princess, with the divorce resulting in her losing the title of Her Royal Highness, which she had been given to her on her 1981 wedding day.
While she was still considered to be a member of the Royal Family, and kept her title of Princess of Wales, it is believed losing her HRH title upset her greatly, however Prince William vowed to fix this.
As reported by The Mirror, Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said that William, who was 14-years-old at the time of the divorce, promised he would give her the title back when he one day became king.
He reportedly told her: “Don’t worry Mummy, I will give it [HRH title] back to you one day when I am King.”
According to Burrell, who was a close confidante of Diana, William’s sweet promise left his mother in tears.
However, William never got to put his plan in action, as Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, when William was just 15.
