Princess Diana’s former personal designer Paul Costelloe has died at the age of 80, his label have confirmed. A statement released by his label have shared that he died surrounding by his family in London.

The statement read: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Costelloe following a short illness. He was surrounded by his wife and seven children and passed peacefully in London.

“We kindly ask that you respect the privacy of the family during this time.”

Paul was appointed as designer as Diana’s personal designer in 1983, continuing his collaboration until her death in 1997.

Typically known for dressing her for formal occasions, he is also known for one of his most memorable outfits for the late royal.

The controversial outfit was a chiffon skirt that became slightly see-through when backlit.

Paul was born in Dublin in 1945 and, prior to his association with the British Royal Family, began his career at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, before becoming design assistant to designer Jacques Esterel.

He later relocated to Milan to support Marks and Spencer in its mission to break the Italian market.

His brand continues to this day selling collections including womenswear, menswear, bags and accessories.

It also sells homeware, jewellery, eyewear and children’s occasionwear.
