Prisoner charged with murdering fellow inmate at HMP Garth

A 35-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a fellow prisoner at HMP Garth, Lancashire Police has announced.

Shaun Newton, who is serving at the Category B prison near Leyland in Lancashire, will appear at Preston Crown Court today to face a murder charge.

This relates to the death of prisoner, Tony Joynes, who was found dead in his cell in July of last year.

Joynes, 47, was serving a 15-year sentence, which began in 2020, after he was jailed for carrying out a knife attack on a couple in their home in Workington, Cumbria.

At 9:08am on July 13 2025, Lancashire Police were called to HMP Garth following reports of a ‘sudden death.’ Upon attending, officers found Tony Joynes dead in his cell.

An investigation was launched, and just over a week later, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of murder.
