(LifeSiteNews) — Pro-life leaders celebrated President Donald Trump signing the “One Big Beautiful Bill” into law on Independence Day, calling it an historic moment for the pro-life movement.
While the original version of the bill would have defunded Planned Parenthood for 10 years, the measure that President Trump signed into law withholds federal funding for just a single year. But that didn’t stop pro-life leaders from expressing their delight while simultaneously urging a permanent end to the flow of federal tax dollars to the abortion giant.
“Thanks to President Trump and pro-life leaders in Congress, millions of Americans will no longer be forced to bankroll the abortion industry with their tax dollars. Defunding abortion businesses, led by Planned Parenthood, marks the greatest pro-life victory since the Dobbs decision,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America president Marjorie Dannenfelser said.
“For decades now, horror after horror has emerged about Planned Parenthood — from the sale of baby body parts to aiding abusers and traffickers, botched abortions, and even the deaths of women in their facilities,” Dannenfelser continued. “Today, the long-fought goal of defunding this industry is finally a reality and taxpayers are no longer forced to prop up a business that harms women and girls, delivers substandard care, and performs over 400,000 abortions every year.”
“Women and families deserve better. Community health centers, which outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities 15 to 1 nationwide, provide comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible care to those in need,” Dannenfelser said. “This historic victory is a decisive step toward ending the abortion industry’s grip on our tax dollars and redirecting resources to places that truly serve women and families.”
“For years, Americans have been forced to subsidize the killing of innocent children and the exploitation of vulnerable women,” Live Action founder Lila Rose noted. “This defunding victory is a crucial step toward ending that injustice.”
“But this is only the beginning,” Rose declared. “Every dollar stripped from the abortion giant is a win for life, but the goal is total and permanent defunding and the closing of every abortion facility’s doors. No taxpayer should ever be complicit in violence. Every mother deserves real support, and every child deserves the chance to live.”
“We will not rest until the abortion industry is fully defunded, the truth is known, and life is protected in law and in love. I am deeply grateful for the lawmakers, activists, and millions of pro-life Americans who have fought tirelessly to reach this moment, and who will keep going until the fight is won,” she added.
Students for Life Action (SFLAction) president Kristan Hawkins praised the pro-life generation and the tireless efforts of so many who engaged in the election and in reaching out to their legislators and President Trump for the hope of ending forced federal support for abortion and those making billions as they end the lives of innocent babies.
“The silver lining in this dark cloud of politics, in which many of us wanted to see healthcare tax dollars redirected from Planned Parenthood & Big Abortion for 10 years, is not the compromise bill that passed,” Hawkins said. “It’s not the one year – it’s the ONE IDEA – that women don’t need Planned Parenthood, and that idea is shared by the GOP in this bill, by the Supreme Court in the South Carolina win, and by the Pro-Life Generation who could have vote for the most pro-abortion ticket in U.S. History – Harris-Walz – and said no.”
“The win is shared by those who have tirelessly engaged in calling on the Republican leadership to act. We wouldn’t have even one-year less in federal support for abortion vendors without the tireless efforts of so many who door knocked, called, and voted their pro-life values,” Hawkins continued. “But a one-year pause in abortion industry support demands that we keep going, calling on President Trump, U.S. Senate Leader (John) Thune, and House Speaker Mike Johnson to repeat the formula and to go even further, as this pushes the next conversation on ending support for Big Abortion into the midterm election. And we will vote Pro-Life first.”
“This is a victory for patients, for providers, and for women’s health,” National Association of Pro-Life Nurses (NAPN) communications director Felipe Avila said. “Congress finally stood up and said enough. But let’s be clear: This is not the finish line. Until every single federal dollar is ripped out of Planned Parenthood’s hands, women and patients are still at risk.”
“The message to Congress is simple: Don’t stop now,” Avila said. “Cutting funding for a year is a start. But as long as taxpayer dollars are funneling into Planned Parenthood’s bottom line, the job isn’t done. Debar them. Shut it down for good. Stop forcing nurses and healthcare workers to underwrite abortion with every paycheck.”
In a humorous bit of verbal jujitsu regarding abortion activists’ fury over Planned Parenthood’s loss of close to $1 billion in taxpayer dollars, one X user quipped, “It’s just a clump of dollars.”
