WHAT’S ON TAP?

Today on Capitol Hill…

The critters are all in recess now until September 2nd. The Senate finished off its session with multiple confirmations — including Jeanine Pirro as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. While there was much consternation about pro forma sessions preventing recess appointments by President Trump, the reasonable inference, given his praise of Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and continued ridicule of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), is that Trump and Thune are on the same page about proceeding with the standard confirmation process upon the Senate’s return — either via a favorable deal worked out in the interim or a rule change essentially forced by the Democrats’ antics.

In the meantime, Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) are asking for a “Big Four” meeting this week with Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to discuss FY26 funding.

The Supreme Court has asked the parties in the Louisiana redistricting case argued (but not decided) last term for briefs addressing “Whether the State’s intentional creation of a second majority-minority congressional district violates the Fourteenth or Fifteenth Amendments to the U. S. Constitution.” Streiff’s got more on that recent order here:

COMING ATTRACTIONS

It’s a ways off still, but President Trump is set to travel to London in mid-September.

MORNING MUSING

There’s a time for outrage. There’s been an inordinate amount of legitimately outrage-inducing abuses and corruption and just plain nastiness in recent years, and many on the right, who’ve felt the pain and frustration of having Lucy yank the football just when it seems the GOP is making headway, are understandably a bit twitchy when it comes to Swampnanigans. (Ooh – I like that – may need to trademark it.)

No one — and I mean no one — should trust Chuck Schumer farther than they can throw him. So maybe it’s just as well that the “deal(s)” he attempted to secure in exchange for nudging along President Trump’s nominations in the Senate were so outlandish that Trump himself told Schumer to “go to hell.” Understandably, some expected the next logical move would be for the Senate to recess and allow for Trump to make recess appointments, so they read John Thune’s decision to continue with pro forma sessions as an effort to “block” Trump’s ability to do so and quickly launched into outrage mode.

But it’s important to note that there are some solid strategic reasons not to handle it that way (most notably that said appointments then only hold through the end of the current Senate session, and we’d then be back at square one with them). Even more important than that, as noted above, Trump himself did not launch into outrage mode. That told me that he and Thune are on the same page with this — and Thune, who’s largely played ball with the administration and worked toward advancing Trump’s agenda, is not the bad guy here.

In other words, reading the Trump leaves, this isn’t the time/issue for outrage — unless, of course, it’s directed at Schumer and his obstructionist Democrat pals.
