A record number of migrants have been returned to France in a single flight as part of the Government’s “one-in, one-out” scheme.
Some 16 illegal asylum seekers were sent back to France, bringing the total number of migrants deported under the deal to 42, and more flights are expected to take place in the coming days.
The departures come as 369 migrants crossed the English Channel in seven boats on Saturday, bringing the total for the year so far to 36,734.
Some 36,816 migrants crossed the Channel in 2024, with the UK just 82 migrants short of surpassing last year’s figure.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “For many years, illegal migrants entered our country with no consequence.
“This is the largest return flight under our historic deal with the French.
“And it sends a warning to those considering entering this country illegally: if you come here by small boat, you can be sent back.
“This is just the beginning – I will scale up these removals to France. And I will do whatever it takes to secure our borders.”

GETTYThe “one-in, one-out” returns deal agreed between Emmanuel Macron and Sir Keir Starmer earlier this year aimed at creating a disincentive for migrants illegally crossing the Channel.
Over 5,000 small boat migrants have made the journey from France since the deal was announced on July 10, 2025.
Border Security Chief Martin Hewitt told MPs that the number of arrivals by small boat to the UK is “frustrating,” but noted that work is ongoing to stop the smuggling routes.
The Border Security Commander, who has been in his position for a year, is convinced the scheme “will deliver”.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp previously called the treaty with France a “massive con”.
He said: “Labour is swindling the British public. Since the deal became operational, over 10,000 illegal immigrants have crossed the Channel, and Labour has removed a mere 26.
“This will obviously not deter anyone.
“We need to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, which will enable us to deport people in days – this would be a real deterrent.”

PAMs Mahmood met in central London with her counterparts from the western Balkans earlier this week to discuss migrants moving through their nations upwards into western Europe.
International policing efforts are attempting to crack down on smuggling gangs who have plotted trafficking routes through the region.
Ms Mahmood said: “I have instructed UK law enforcement to explore all options, including deploying operations in the western Balkans, to tackle illegal migration routes.
“I have pledged to do whatever it takes to secure our borders. That is exactly what I am doing.”
Some 22,000 people were smuggled through the western Balkans by organised gangs last year, according to the Home Office.
