The drone strikes in Poland come after a Russian glide bomb struck villagers waiting in line for their pensions on Tuesday in Yarova, Donetsk region, killing at least 24 people and injuring 19, Ukrainian officials said.
Most of the dead were elderly residents, including one woman collecting payments for her bedridden mother-in-law. Survivors described flames and wreckage engulfing the small settlement, which lies just six miles from the front line.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as “frankly brutal”, calling for tougher global sanctions on Russia. More than 12,000 civilians have been killed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, according to UN figures.
