A second body has been pulled from the sea after a search and rescue operation was launched for four missing people off the East Yorkshire coast. Police have confirmed that as well as a 67-year-old man another person has died after getting in trouble in the sea in Withernsea.
As well as the two confirmed dead, the search continues for another missing person. A spokesperson for Humberside police said: “We can now confirm that earlier this evening (Friday, January 2) a second body was recovered from the sea. The circumstances are not believed to be suspicious.
“Humberside Police officers along with HM Coastguard, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and Humberside Fire & Rescue, remain in the area as searches continue for one more person who entered the water this afternoon.
“We continue to ask that people avoid the area to allow emergency services to work efficiently and safely.”
The update follows an extensive search and rescue operation as one more person who entered the water on Friday afternoon remains at sea. HM Coastguard, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and Humberside Fire and Rescue remain in the area, according to police.
Police added that circumstances surrounding both deaths are not believed to be suspicious.
The Coastguard previously said: “HM Coastguard is responding to reports made at about 3.10pm on 2 January of a number of people in difficulty in the water at Withernsea.
“An HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft have been sent as well as Coastguard Rescue Teams from Withernsea, Hornsea and Hull.
“The RNLI’s inshore lifeboat from Withernsea and all-weather lifeboat from Bridlington are assisting, as well as Hornsea Inshore Rescue.
“Yorkshire Ambulance Service has been sent as well as an air ambulance. Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue are also in attendance.” The search for the final missing person continues into the night with emergency services remaining on scene.
