There was finally a deal passed in the Senate on Sunday toward opening the government.
Eight senators, seven Democrats and Sen. Angus King (I-ME), who caucuses with the Democrats, flipped to vote for the deal, as we reported. It now goes to the House for a vote.

Our sister site Townhall caught this important comment from King, saying the “quiet part out loud,” admitting that they caved because their strategy “was not working.” It was an admission not only that this nonsense was all on them, but they weren’t getting what they wanted regarding healthcare.
A Democrat senator who helped keep the shutdown alive is now admitting the truth: he caved because the strategy had completely collapsed.
Sen. Angus King told reporters he voted for the compromise funding deal for one simple reason — “it wasn’t working.”

“Because it wasn’t working. How long would it take to get a response to say it isn’t working? In other words, it’s been six weeks. Republicans made it clear they weren’t going to discuss the healthcare issue – the Affordable Care Act tax credits – until the shutdown was over. We tried to keep working that for six weeks. It didn’t happen.
The vote that we have – it’s not a guarantee, for sure…there was zero chance of dealing with the ACA as long as the shutdown continued.”
He claimed they increased their chances on the issue by having an agreement to discuss it/have a vote.
But Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) had been offering a vote if they ended the shutdown for weeks. So they could have done this a while ago, without all this drawn-out nonsense and imposing pain on the American people.
So they’re basically conceding they did it, and their strategy was a failure. They didn’t get their main point, and the Republicans didn’t cave or give them anything on this issue. Plus, there are no guarantees that they even get a vote on the ACA issue in the House.
Meanwhile, their own party is having a meltdown over this, with the progressives/socialists like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) flipping his lid in response and people like Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17) calling for the ouster of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
It Begins: Top Democrat Calls on Chuck Schumer to Be Replaced After Shutdown Surrender
So if Schumer thought this was going to make him look tough to the leftist base, he would have been better off caving and going along with it to begin with. He just made his situation worse.
It also tends to lend credence to the belief that the Democrats were just holding out until after the election to help their chances. But that’s not helping them now with their base, which is mad.
Good on the Republicans for holding fast on the issue. This exposed not only how craven the Democrats are to put the American people through all this, but what a failure the ACA is in the process, if you need subsidies from the taxpayers to deal with it.
Editor’s Note: After more than 40 days of screwing Americans, a few Dems have finally caved. The Schumer Shutdown was never about principle—just inflicting pain for political points.
