Spanish police in Benidorm arrested a British fugitive convicted of sexually assaulting two people. A British court found the 44-year-old man guilty of the crimes before he absconded.
He had been granted bail and was awaiting sentencing when he fled the UK, prompting British officials to issue an International Arrest Warrant. The man was apprehended after he was spotted behaving suspiciously at his hotel complex by officers from the Policia Nacional. Unable to provide any ID to the police, he was accompanied to his rooms, where officers conducted a search.
They quickly realised the man was on a wanted list and he was taken into custody, where he now awaits extradition to the UK.
He was placed under the jurisdiction of the National High Court, which is handling the extradition process.
The 44-year-old faces a ten-year prison sentence when he returns to Britain, according to reports.
Benidorm is a popular year-round holiday spot for Brits, with nearly 900,000 visiting the resort in 2024.
But the once-thriving tourist destination has been described as a “ghost town” after visitors appear to have abandoned the area.
Footage showed the usually bustling holiday resort looking less busy than it ever has.
Taken in August this year, videos of Benidorm showed empty streets.
