The Virginia gubernatorial debate between Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) and her Democrat opponent, former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, was held Thursday night at a pivotal moment in both of their campaigns in the aftermath of the Jay Jones texting scandal.
As RedState reported, Spanberger was repeatedly pressed on whether she still endorsed the Democrat nominee for attorney general after revelations that he sent text messages in 2022 to a former GOP House of Delegates colleague in which Jones fantasized about killing then-Speaker of the House Todd Gilbert (R) with “two bullets to the head,” and of Gilbert’s children dying in his wife Jennifer’s arms.
Spanberger never addressed the question directly despite numerous questions and again did not call for Jones to drop out of the race, proclaiming that “We are all running our individual races. It is up to every person to make their own decision.”

In another debate moment that is getting a lot of attention, Spanberger was asked about where she stood on boys in girls’ locker rooms, bathrooms, etc., a question she has studiously sidestepped on the campaign trail, even though Virginia has in some ways become Ground Zero on this issue.
Again, this was one Spanberger fumbled, and dodged on, finally deciding on a canned response that did her no favors:
“My answer is that each local community decision should be made between parents and educators and teachers in each community,” Spanberger said, pointing to her background in law enforcement and role as a mother.
“Nothing is more important to me than the safety of all children,” she said.
Spanberger declined to say whether she would rescind the measure signed by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin that would require students to go only to the restrooms of their birth gender.
Watch:
Here’s the exchange where Abigail Spanberger is unable to simply say that men should not be allowed to change in the same locker rooms as girls.

Sensing an opportunity, Earle-Sears went in for the finishing move, leading to Spanberger having what some might view as something similar to a Mike Dukakis moment:
Abigail Spanberger COLDLY stares into the darkness as @WinWithWinsome asks if she’d comfort young girls crying after being harassed by biological males.
No compassion. No answer. Just silence.
