And so it is done. In the House, that is.
President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” passed the House by a single vote on Thursday, and now heads to the Senate, which will likely craft its own version of the legislation.
Assuming the bill passes and is reconciled with the House version, Trump will sign it into law — if he likes the compromise legislation, which I’m sure he’ll approve, given the heated debates to get to this point.
While “all-or-nothing” House Republicans likely weren’t happy with the bill, Speaker Mike Johnson deserves kudos for getting it passed. Yes, Mike Johnson, who some on our side have unmercifully skewered for numerous reasons along the way — mostly for not “fixing” the “impossible” with respect to Trump-backed legislation.
As my colleague Joe Cunningham wrote on Thursday, “Somehow, Johnson just got it done”:
The “Big, Beautiful Bill” passed this week with just two Republican no votes and one member reportedly asleep during the vote. Everyone else—from fiscal hawks to moderates to members of the SALT Caucus—came to the table and voted yes. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of work. Quiet, diligent, behind-the-scenes work. The kind of work that Johnson has become known for.
Amen.

Johnson told Newsmax on Thursday after the bill passed that Republicans proved in less than two years during Trump’s first administration that they could bring about the “greatest economy in the history of the world,” and by passing the “one, big, beautiful bill,” even more will now be achieved by pushing the president’s America First agenda.
We’re going to do that again on steroids. [The legislation is called] “one, big, beautiful bill” [for a reason], It’s everything from ensuring border security to restoring American energy dominance.
We’re going to prevent the largest tax increase in U.S. history, so the equivalent here is probably the largest tax cut in the history of the country. We’re going to get the economy going again by cutting regulations, cutting down on the permitting time for things to get the economy going again.
As I wrote on Thursday, while most on the left blindly slam the spending bill out of hand — with little or no knowledge of its actual content — others embrace the “big, beautiful bill” as a victory for conservatism. Yet, speaking as a fiscal conservative, while the bill is definitely “big,” I wouldn’t necessarily characterize it as “beautiful.”
That said, House Republicans did the right thing by passing the legislation. While it’s far from a fiscal conservative’s dream bill, it is a start. Congressional Republicans have for too long played the “If I can’t get everything I want, I’m going to vote against it” game, which hasn’t usually worked out all that well in the past.

Johnson told Newsmax the vote came after a lengthy “bottom-up, member-driven process,” adding:
Everybody’s exhausted, but it’s been a long year, really. We started working on this in March of last year, and all of our committees and all of our members were all hands-on, sleeves rolled up, getting it done.
We squeezed so much into this. You’ll begin to see all these pieces, from peace through strength, I mean, everything in the domestic agenda and the foreign agenda as well, the secure border, prosperity again, security for the people. This is a big thing. We’re really proud of it.
Let’s hope Speaker Johnson, Trump, and the Republican Party are right — both for the American people, the 2026 midterm elections, and even the general election in 2028.
The bottom line is that the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is a start, even if not the long-term solution.
